Sixteen Candles

We should to be putting 16 candles on the cake today.

We should be going for your driver license.

We should be buying Homecoming dresses and thinking ahead for Prom.

We should be planning fun and silly things for your little brother and sister for Halloween.

We should be having those heart to hearts that only mothers and daughters can have.

We should be arguing about curfews.

We should be trying to explain to you that we really do understand even though we're "old".

We should be...

But we aren't.

Instead we are remembering all of the should be's and feeling a bit sad.

Tomorrow we'll go back to remembering that we should be grateful to have been your parents.
