The Death of A Friend

Cuddles.

Mr. Cuddles.

Cuddly Wuddly...

Depending on the mood.

Cuddles was a teddy bear hamster, very fuzzy and very cuddly. He was very wise in his old age, having lived almost a full 3 years - 2 years being a long average lifespan for this variety. He enoyed running on his wheel, climbing circles through his habitat tubes. He loved carrots and yogurt drops, but didn't care much for apples in any form. Best of all, he would sit in your hand and eat shelled sunflower seeds - if you had the patience to just let him sit that is. He was well loved and will be missed.

I wish I could say he died in his sleep. But no, I startled him one morning and gave him a heart attack. No, we are not paying for an autopsy to confirm that notion, but he was alive one moment, on the ceiling of his cage the next (oops for startling a sleeping being), and 5 minutes later deceased. You do the math. Besides, the kids think it makes great "Mom Guilt" - you know, the stuff they use against you when they want you to do something you swore you wouldn't do. Like buy another rodent. Sigh. Didn't I swear I was never going to own another rodent after this one passed? But nearly a week later I still find myself going to the shelf that held his cage - to check on him morning and night. Of course there are other critters in that room as well but they aren't the cuddly warm kind. I do believe we're going hamster shopping next weekend.

That would produce some major guilt! Poor guy. I'm sure it was something else though, maybe just one too many sunflower seeds? I have fond memories of my fuzzy little teddy bear hamster. Alas, someone forgot to latch his cage and he was last seen making a run for it under the fridge...

Oh my, you have had quite a week. Hope things calm down for you!

Isn't amazing how kids manage to do that? I have made a midnight Wal-Mart run to replace a beloved beta fish before the kids noticed.

Hi there, thanks for commenting on my blog! So sorry to hear about Mr Cuddles, I hope the guilt doesn't get to you too much. I left the cage door open one night and our hamsters, Candy and Princess, ran out. We found them dead a few days later. I think the cat was "playing" with them. We also found a dead fish that the cat was "playing" with.

I would feel guilty also, I fel so guilty when DD's hermit crab dies I went out to buy her two more, now we are up to 4. I thought I was not spraying them enough and that it was my fault it dies. Things we do.

Thanks for visiting me. It's always sad when a pet dies. My cat left us almost one year ago, right before Christmas. My mom got me a black cat trinket from her travels and gave it to me for the holiday - I don't know what she was thinking because I broke down in front of everyone! I've been anxious to get another pet, but hubby is putting it off as long as he possibly can. The kids want a dog, oh my.

Happy hamster shopping. Hoping you find another cute and cuddly one to love.
